Rockstar has not published a square mile or square kilometre figure for Grand Theft Auto VI, and it never published one for Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2 either. What it has given is a set of multiples, from Rockstar North's head of development: the map is twice the size of GTA V's, and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2's.

The multiples Rockstar gave
These came out of a visit to Rockstar North in the run up to the Extended Look, when the YouTube creator TGG played the game and Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, put the comparisons to him directly. Kotaku, Video Games Chronicle and PC Gamer all reported them on 27 and 28 August 2026, each attributing them to Nelson.
| Comparison | What was said |
|---|---|
| Versus GTA V | Twice the size of the GTA V map |
| Versus Red Dead Redemption 2 | Three times the playable area |
| Vice City versus Los Santos | Twice as big |
| With suburbs | Eleven times Los Santos and its surrounds, as reported |
| In square miles | Not published by Rockstar |
Note the wording on the second row. Nelson's comparison was to the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is a narrower thing than that game's whole map. Outlets have paraphrased it both ways. We are keeping the narrower version, because that is what was said.
A multiple is not a measurement. Two times an unpublished number is still an unpublished number. That is the whole reason this page cannot give you a figure in square miles, and why any site that does is converting somebody's estimate into a fact.
Why there is no square mile figure
Three reasons stack up, and they are worth understanding once rather than being surprised by each time a new number appears.
- There is no official baseline. Rockstar has never published the size of the GTA V map, so doubling it does not produce an authoritative number. The widely repeated GTA V figures come from fan cartographers measuring in game coordinates.
- Nobody agrees on what to count. Measurements of the same map differ substantially depending on whether open water, uncrossable terrain and building interiors are included, which is why the commonly quoted GTA V figures range so widely.
- Nobody outside Rockstar has walked the VI map. Every published estimate for Leonida is traced from trailers, from the Extended Look, and in some cases from leaked material. We do not use leaks, and a traced estimate is not a measurement.
Community mapping projects are doing careful work and are open about their methods, and their Leonida estimates are worth reading as estimates. They disagree with each other, they change with each new piece of footage, and not one of them is a figure Rockstar has confirmed. So we are not putting any of their numbers in a heading and calling it the map size.
What Rockstar has published about the world
Not a size, but not nothing either. The setting is the state of Leonida, with Vice City in it, and Rockstar's own game page describes a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state.

- Captured on PlayStation 5
Rockstar published a People and Places section for Leonida on its site, and the Extended Look of 27 August 2026 ran about twenty six minutes, which Rockstar says was captured entirely in game on PlayStation 5. Those are the two best official looks at the scale of the place, and neither carries a number.
Rockstar has not published an in-game map either. On 24 September 2026 Rockstar opened pre-orders for The Goodtime State: Vice City Collection, a merchandise box that ships on 19 November. One of its eleven items is a double-sided souvenir poster with a map of Leonida on the back. That printed poster is the only official map so far, and the product photo shows the map side only partly. The "full map" images passed around since 18 August 2026 come from a leak, and Kotaku reported copies being taken down on the copyright owner's reports. Nothing on this page is measured from them. See our fact check.
When a real figure will exist
Realistically, weeks after 19 November 2026. Measuring a map properly needs the retail game, a method somebody can check, and usually an argument about whether water and interiors count. Expect the first careful measurements from the same community mapping projects, expect them to disagree with each other at first, and expect Rockstar to stay quiet, as it has for every previous game.
When a measurement with a stated method exists, this page will carry it, with the method described and the source named. It will not carry a single confident number before then.
