There is no measured answer yet, because nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game. The nearest thing to a figure is Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, telling the New York Times that one playthrough of his own ran to roughly 80 hours, covering the story plus some optional content. That is a developer describing his own run, not a published game length.

What was said, and by whom
The 80 hour figure comes out of Rockstar's press campaign around the Extended Look, which premiered on 27 August 2026. Nelson spoke to the New York Times, and several outlets carried the comment the same week, among them Insider Gaming and GamingBolt.
- Figure
- About 80 hours
- Said by

- The New York Times

- Story plus some optional content
- Build
- Not the retail release
- Official length
- Not published
Read that table carefully, because the headline version of this story drops half of it. Nelson was describing his own playthrough, which included optional goals with consequences for the story, on a build from earlier in the year. It is not Rockstar publishing a main story length, and it is not a promise about how long your run will take.
What Rockstar has published about the shape of the game
Very little, and none of it is a duration. Two things are on Rockstar's own pages.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is described as a single-player experience. The PlayStation Store listing says so in as many words, and Rockstar has announced nothing resembling an online mode at launch.
- The story is divided into chapters. Rockstar's Ultimate Edition blurb refers to items uncovered behind each chapter, which tells you the structure exists and nothing about how many there are or how long they run.
Everything else about pacing, mission counts and endings is unknown. Leaked material claiming otherwise circulates; this site does not use it.
What the last two Rockstar games measured
Useful for scale, and worth labelling precisely: these are player submitted averages on HowLongToBeat, not figures from Rockstar.
| Game | Main story | Completion |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | About 32 hours on average, roughly 21 hours rushed | Commonly 80 hours and up |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | About 50 hours | Reported as high as 182 hours |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | Unknown | Unknown |
Against that, an 80 hour run through story plus some side content would sit above Red Dead Redemption 2. We are not going to turn that into a prediction of a main story figure, because the two numbers are not measuring the same thing and one of them does not exist yet.
Why your own time will differ anyway
Four reasons, all of which apply to every open world game and all of which will apply here.
- Two protagonists. Rockstar has said the story is Jason and Lucia's, which usually means missions that can be approached in more than one order.
- Optional content with story consequences. Nelson said his own run included some, which is exactly the kind of content people either hoover up or skip entirely.
- Difficulty of the ending you want. Completion percentage and trophies are a different job from the credits. Our completion checklist exists for that.
- Whether you use cheats. Codes change pacing considerably, and there are none verified yet: the cheats page says so plainly and fills in from launch night.
When there will be a real answer
From 19 November 2026, and then it improves for weeks. The first credible main story times will come from players finishing the retail game, and averages only settle once thousands of runs are in. Anyone publishing a precise main story figure before launch day is guessing.
This page will carry a measured range once one exists, with the source named and the sample described. Until then the honest answer is the one in the lead.
