Is GTA 6 on disc? Physical copies explained

No. Grand Theft Auto VI has a boxed Standard Edition, but the box holds a download code and no disc. There is no physical Ultimate Edition. Rockstar's own store says "A disc will not be included in the box".

By Vicedex, an independent GTA 6 reference. How we check and report a mistake.

Our fact check rates "GTA 6 comes on a disc" as false. This page goes through what Rockstar, Take-Two and named retailers have said since.

What Rockstar and Take-Two say

The Rockstar Games Store lists a "Physical (Code-in-Box) Version". It says: "Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12." It adds: "A disc will not be included in the box."

Take-Two said the same in its release of 24 June 2026. The physical version, "containing a download code inside the box", is available from 12 November 2026 to support pre-loading. Rockstar support adds that there is no physical Ultimate Edition, and that Standard Edition owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately, in Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions.

Press covered it the day it was announced. Video Games Chronicle reported on 24 June 2026 that Rockstar confirmed there would be no disc version at launch. Push Square quoted the pre-order details sent to press: "A disc will not be included in the box."

The box holds a code that can be redeemed for the digital download, as Push Square quoted Rockstar's pre-order details, so the game has to be downloaded before it can be played. Boxed copies are available from 12 November so that the game can be pre-loaded: see GTA 6 pre-load. Rockstar has published no download size, so there is no figure to give: see GTA 6 file size.

Where boxed copies are listed

Retailers are selling the code in box version. The Target listing for PlayStation 5 is titled "Code in Box, Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26" at 79.99 dollars, and carries the sentence "A disc will not be included in the box". The Amazon listing for Xbox Series X|S has the same title format. Target's page says that ordering gets you the Vintage Vice City Pack. Prices and bonuses are on GTA 6 pre-order.

Take-Two's release offers the free month of GTA+ "for digital pre-orders". It does not say that the boxed version carries it.

What retailers and analysts said

Two retailers named in Kotaku's report of 24 June 2026 said they would not stock a code-only version. Video Games Plus said it would carry a disc edition if Rockstar released one. Loot Box Gaming said it would not support the release of the code in box version. Kotaku reported both statements as posted by the retailers themselves.

Video Games Chronicle quoted industry analysts the same day. Mat Piscatella of Circana said: "I don't think it matters all that much either way." That is opinion, not a Rockstar statement.

What is not known

We found no Rockstar or Take-Two announcement of a disc release at any date, and no statement on whether one could follow. Kotaku reported on 27 July 2026 that Rockstar support says codes sold in Japan expire 170 days after launch.
